“Cut Down Your Entourage”: tips for NFL players in case of a lockout

Generally speaking the astronomical salaries paid to professional athletes don’t really bother me. Is it crazy that teachers get paid mere pennies and entertainers get paid millions of dollars? Absolutely. But we all like our entertainment and we are willing to pay for it. With that being said, I was blown away yesterday when I read two articles in USA Today about whether or not veteran players should pool money to help those who make less in case of a lockout, and tips for saving money in the NFL Players Association handbook.

I recognize that our lifestyles often increase with our salaries but we’re talking about men who in 2010 made a minimum of $325k for the year. This doesn’t take into consideration any other endorsements, compensation for appearances, etc.

Now I can’t argue with the fact that it would be very nice of the more “well to do” veterans to share the fruits of their labor with those who make less. That would be generous of them. However, are those making the league minimum squandering their hundreds of thousands of dollars to such a degree that they are truly strapped for cash?  I suppose if they are, the tips in the NFLPA handbook would be beneficial. However as the article says…

…some of the advice hardly applies to the typical household: hold off on buying “motorized toys” and expensive jewelry and reduce the size of your entourage.

Among other suggestions to players:

  • Save 25% of your annual pay.
  • When going out, remember to “leave the club with your wallet and budget intact.” If socializing, do so “with a purpose,” such as dining out to network for the next phase of their lives after football.
  • Say “no” or “not now” to money requests from family and friends, and don’t “pay friends to perform work that you can easily do.”

…I guess those suggestions aren’t so far fetched, I mean with the economy being what it is, I’ve had to cut down my entourage and I always make sure to “leave the club with [my] wallet and budget intact.” No more Patrón for everyone.

Snowbound Snowshoeing

This weekend The Crossing had our winter retreat, Snowbound. It was a great time and it was nice to wrap the trip up with a little snowshoeing. Washington is absolutely beautiful and it’s great to get out and enjoy it.

Lifting And Running, Lifting And Running

Let me start off by saying that I am not a big guy. I’ve simply come to the conclusion that I have not been created to be a bulky, muscle bound invdividual. I can go to the gym on a regular basis and workout, but in order for me to really bulk up, I need to put in serious time with the weights and eat large quantities of high protein foods.

However, there is something truly enjoyable about spending some regular time working out. And while the results I see may not match that of someone with a more muscular build, it’s quite satisfying to know that you’re working to keep your body in optimal condition.

Right now I find myself debating about whether or not I should begin training to run a half marathon this summer. I rode the STP (200+ mile bike ride from Seattle to Portland) last summer and that was great, but I think I want a different challenge this year and a half marathon might be it.

I’m not a huge fan of running if I don’t have something chasing me or something for me to chase, but I’ve been spending some time running lately and I’m starting to get delusional enough to think that I just might be able to pull the half marathon off.

We’ll see, what happens.

White Walls & Rubber Balls

This last weekend I took advantage of a guest pass to a local gym so that I could play racquetball with my friend Taras.  Great idea. Racquetball is a sport I picked up in college with my wife.  We took a racquetball PE class for a couple credits and since then I’ve had a few stints playing the sport.

It’s funny though, how when you’re done you discover muscles you didn’t even know existed. Can you say SORE!

Despite the sore muscles and bruises from crashing into the white walls diving for rubber balls, it’s a pretty incredible workout and a great way to spend a couple hours.

It’s actually so enjoyable that part of me wants to switch gyms just so I can play on a regular basis. But whether I transfer my membership or not, the last weekend was great.

I hope I can get another game in before my guest pass expires…

As A Dawg Returns To Its Vomit

Either I’m dedicated or a fool. Your call.

Year after year, I cheer on the Washington Huskies. They are my team. More than the Seahawks, or the Mariners, or the Sonics (RIP), The University of Washington football team is my team. For years that was a great things. I grew up watching the Huskies go to Rose Bowls and compete for national championships. However, over the last 4-5 years U-Dub football has been sickening.

This season has yet to be the exception.

This may sound crazy but my heart literally hurts, week after week watching the huskies either get their heads handed to them or blow games with stupid penalties (like today).

It’s like this…

You’re in love with someone and keep dating off and on. You keep going back to the person because they say they have changed and you want so desperately to believe that’s true that you open yourself back up to the risk of heartache, hoping and praying that things will be different this time. Only each time you are let down again, and again and again.

The reality is you know that you can’t keep going on like this. It’s not healthy. It’s a distraction. But, you can’t cut ties with the one you love.

That’s my relationship with the Huskies. I remember the good ol’days and long to have them back again. Yet, week after week, year after year they let me down.

I feel like the fool in Proverbs 26:11 “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.” – in this case it is “as a dawg” returns to its vomit…nice play on words…you see how I did that…haha…uh hmm…anyway…

When oh when, will the right the ship?!…I’ve got to get the taste of vomit out of my mouth!

Thanks For Selling Out Nickels

Dear Mayor Nickels,

Thank you for giving up. I appreciate your willingness to give away the basketball team that I have grown up watching. I appreciate your willingness to blow smoke at all of us fans. Thank you for selling out.

I hope that 75 million dollars does you a lot of good, because it’s not going to do a thing for me.

If The Sonics Leave

If the Sonics leave Seattle, I’m done with the NBA.
