Caption Please

My cousin Joshua Mahar took this brilliant photograph and I think it deserves a caption. Any ideas?

Questions

Do you ever find yourself with more questions than answers? I’m sitting at my favorite coffee shop realizing that right now I have more questions than answers. Questions about I’m going to do this weekend… what I’m going to do for my final project in my cross-cultural ministry class… how much time I have left to park in the parking lot, etc.

Then there are the bigger. more important questions like…

How can I best be used by God?

If you’ve ever experienced the feeling like you have more questions than answers you know how overwhelming it can be.

Right now I’m praying for a great deal of clarity. There is a lot that I feel like I need to sort out and I don’t really know where to begin.

Finger Point…Just Not At Me

People love to point fingers. They LOVE it.

It makes  them feel good. Makes them feel as though they are on the right side of the fence. But when the finger is turned around and staring them squarely in the face, whether intentional or not, they get so defensive.

I watched an incredible example of this unfold today and it made me sick. Now I understand that I do this from time to time…perhaps I am even doing it now with this post, but what I observed today was horrific.

Watching people fight about things that shouldn’t be fought about and getting so worked up that they completely miss the purpose of the message being conveyed.

It is my prayer that I won’t have this type attitude, that I will be teachable and receptive to encouragement, motivation and even criticism, when it inevitably comes.

In fact it is my hope that I will be the first person to point a finger in my direction when it is deserved.

For those who were involved in the situation tonight, I hope there is a sense of conviction about how distastefully things were handled.

What’s On My Shelf

I remember watching Reading Rainbow as a kid and getting all of Levar Burton’s book recommendations. Well I thought I’d follow in his footsteps…

Here are the four books I’m currently reading.

These are great books…”But you don’t have to take my word for it.”

Awkward Gym Conversation

So I’m on the treadmill at the gym and I over hear the following conversation between the guy next to me and one of his friends/acquaintances.

Friend: So I have to apologize.

Treadmill Guy: What for?

Friend: Well, I didn’t really remember who your wife was but I have wandering eyes and it turns out I always end up checking her out.

Treadmill Guy: (awkward laugh)

Can you say seriously AWKWARD?!

If You Could Only Make One Resolution…

If you could make only one resolution for 2010, what would it be? Lose weight, make more money, get to church more frequently…etc.

Leave a comment of your resolution.

December 26th Induced Depression

Without fail, December 26th brings about a good dose of depression for me. This year seems to be a little better, but nevertheless I still feel it.

It’s because I love the holiday season so much. From Thanksgiving to Christmas I am in my happy place.

I love cool weather, that entices the wearing of sweaters and music that speaks of peace on earth and a fictional fat man. I love feasts, family and frosty.

I love the change of pace, with days off of work and regular parties to attend.

And I love the Hope that was born into this world as a human baby, yet divine.

Unfortunately most of this gets put back into boxes and stored on dusty garage shelves until the next year; leaving only piles of wrappings and refrigerator doors covered in Christmas cards.

So tonight as I do every year, I reflect on all of the joy and excitement that has taken place over the last two months and long for it to come again in 2010.

When Police Officers Fall

I was watching television last night and learned of yet another police shooting in western Washington. Two Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies shot while attending to a domestic dispute call. They were looking to bring peace and were met with bullets.

That makes three in less that three months…

… Five deaths… three injured…

It’s interesting how events like these leave you shaken. To know that the people who give their lives to protect us are being gunned down for no reason is incomprehensible to me.

What possesses a person to do that…?

What satisfaction can come from killing…?

Situations like this remind me of how broken our world is. How completely in shambles we are as people and how desperately we need to be redeemed…all of us.

When police officers fall, it reminds me of how vulnerable we are as humans and how we need someone bigger and stronger and more powerful to save us.

Someone willing to show us the compassion, grace and forgiveness we need but most definitely don’t deserve.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  – Roman 5:8
