Here's To Academia, Late Nights And The Future
This December I will have been out of college for four years – crazy thought. When I graduated I don’t know if I really ever thought I’d go back. The thought of getting my masters degree was daunting.
More tests, more papers, more money, more time, more stress…yuck.
Four years later however, I sit here pondering my personal statement for admission to grad school. It’s been a task trying to find the right school, the right program, the right timing. But I think most of that has been worked out and now I am hopefully mere months away from becoming an Indiana Wesleyan University grad student.
My passion really is discipleship, coaching, leadership development, etc. and so if accepted (please Jesus let me be accepted) I will be pursuing a MA in Ministry with a Ministerial Leadership concentration.
That’s exciting.
My long term dream would be to be established in a great church (check, I’ve got that going for me) but travel around consulting and speaking at other churches and conferences. That will obviously take time but when I have completed my masters I will have a great education and an incredible base of experience to start from.
So here’s to academia, late nights and the future.

Pics of the Spider Trap from "The Sissification of Me"
I figured that posting some pictures of “The Spider Trap” as mentioned in my last post “The Sissification of Me.” would be interesting.
So, this weekend while Monika and I were in Bellingham for Valentine’s Day we decided to drive past the trap and take some pics.
Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures of it while I lived there, but these pictures will give you a pretty good idea what a dump it was.
I do have to say however that the yard did look slightly more groomed when I lived there than it does now.

I lived in the basement appartment. You can kind of see the front window behind the bush.

There’s a close up of the window. Wow, what a classy place.

That little basement door was the main enterance into the “Spider Trap.”
If only I had pictures of the inside. HAHA!

SPU Graduation, Reflections On Western

This afternoon, all afternoon, my sister graduated from Seattle Pacific University. It was a long ordeal, but very cool.
It’s kind of weird to think that I graduated 2 1/2 years ago and now my sister is done as well. It seems like just yesterday that I was wandering the brick walkways of Western Washington University and yet here I am over two years removed.
Today’s ceremony took me back to my time in college and reminded me once again just how amazing my time was.
It was without a doubt one of the most incredible stretches of time in my life…
Today I also felt challenged to continue my education. I’ve thought about going back to get my master’s degree, but I definitely now feel like it’s something that I need to do.
College is good.
If you’re contemplating whether or not to go, go. It’s a life changing experience.

College
Yesterday my wife Monika and I visited my sister in Wallingford. She’s living in a great old house in a fun part of Seattle and is rapping up the final chapter of her college experience. For me it was a little sentimental. It reminded me of living in my basement apartment on High street (we called it ”The Spider Trap”) with my three roommates. It reminded me of shopping the sales at Haggen Grocery. It reminded me of venturing out downtown in the late hours of the evening to go play pool at Kendricks. It reminded me of a lot of things.
College was such an incredible experience and eating at the Thai Kitchen on Queen Anne Hill last night reminded me of just how much fun it really was.
While I am at a great place in my life right now, I hope I don’t forget all of the great memories, people, experiences…
If you read this and you are contemplating what to do after high school. I can’t emphasize enough how great college is. Not for the schooling, or the degree although those are important. But for the bon fires on Blanchard hill, the late night conversations in the dorm lobby that last until the wee hours of the morning, the pajama clad breakfasts in the cafeteria on Saturday morning and the laughter. Those things will stay with you long after you forget how to solve a philosophical equation or run a regression analysis on a set of data.
College is not just an education, it’s a memory full of incredible experiences.
