Thoughts On The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

With the exception of my sister and perhaps Santa Claus there are few people who love Christmas and the holiday season as much as I do. I can take or leave rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens, but Christmas and a good snow fall are in fact a few of my favorite things.

It’s taken me some time to realize why I have such an affinity for these things but after several years of deliberation I think I have a good grasp on why I love these events so much. Although a part of it is the beauty of the season and an untouched blanket of snow, it truly goes deeper.

What I love about these things it is how they effect our everyday lives. Unfortunately we live in a world that is constantly in motion. The pace of life and the expectations on our time have be become so great that we fail to focus on the things that truly matter in life; things such as family and the many other blessings that God has given us. Our lives are now driven by the desire to keep up with the joneses and we fail to pay adequate attention to the things that are most valuable in life.

I understand that the holidays can be stressful with shopping and decorating and preparing large meals, but during these times we also come together as families and friends in ways that we don’t during the rest of the year. And when the snow begins to fall and a quietness blankets our cities, we are forced to stay home from school and work. And if only for a day or two, we are left with time on our hands to sip hot drinks, read old grocery store novels and play antiquated boardgames from our childhood.

This excuse to remove myself from the rat race is something I long for all year . I long to spend extended periods of time with family, to eat good food and forget about the stresses of everyday life.

It is much too easy to slip into the trap of busyness and workaholism. To get caught up in scheduling appointments, paying bills and as a result miss out of the truly finer things in life.

As as we enter into the “most wonderful time of the year”, It is my prayer that you would soak in every minute of it.

Take advantage of your time off.

Enjoy the company of family and friends.

And don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the myth that the holidays are about spending money.

The holidays and those snowy winter days are about so much more than that and I encourage you to savor the time that you have to rest, laugh, converse and pray with good friends and wonderful family.

This is what I have learned makes this the most wonderful time of the year.

Flight 815

This is quite possibly the best thing I will see all day. Saw this originally at www.ragamuffinsoul.com and then found the original design at www.likecool.com.

A Week In Haiti – Part 2

Church:

The Sunday after we arrived Haiti we had the opportunity to attend a church service  with the church whose building we were going to be demoing. The church was located in a little village on the outskirts of Port Au Prince in the middle of a banana plantation. As we drove down the dusty pitted road we kept an eye out for roaming goats, pigs and cows all the while taking in the overwhelming conditions in which people were living. It was like being in the middle of a National Geographic spread.

It’s funny, you see pictures from places like Haiti in magazines and on television and you know they’re real, but the reality of just how real they are doesn’t sink in until you drive past a group of people bathing in a filthy river or see a boy no more than two years old holding his younger sister’s hand to keep her from walking out into the street.

As we drove into the village constructed of cinder block buildings covered in sheets of rusty metal and tarps, many of the residents of came out to observe the caravan of white SUVs carrying pasty white foreigners. Some seemed excited while others decidedly cautious.

After finding the temporary church home just down the road from precariously leaning church building, we were greeted by excited smiles and waives from the beautifully dressed children in Sunday school and the pastor’s call to action to make room under the blue tarp and blanket structure for us to sit.

As we sweated in that rickety tent, watching the pastor preach, the men and women recite verses and the children sing it was obvious that despite the lack of stuff, God was still at work. And while many in Haiti must feel that there is no hope, that was not the case with these villagers. They sang songs of worship, danced with hearts filled with joy and praised God as if they were worshiping in the middle of brand new church building.

When the service was over we walked out into the heavy 90 plus degree humid heat to cool down (truly). As we walked over to evaluate the building we were going to be working on, many of the children followed and posed for pictures with us. Once again I felt as though I was in the midst of a discovery channel special with all of the children gathering around to pose with each of us, and in one sense it was.

I discovered a sense of joy that I don’t know I have ever experienced. These people who literally had nothing were at least on some level joyful and that was special. It was a reminder to me to not take the blessings I have been given for granted. As cliche as that might sound, it hit home on a whole new level that morning.

I truly am blessed.

A Week In Haiti – Part 1

Over the last six years I have had the opportunity to go on four amazing mission trips. Two to the Gulf Coast region for Hurricane Katrina Relief, one to Tijuana, Mexico and most recently to Port Au Prince, Haiti. Each trip changed me and opened my eyes to the realities of the world, but my trip to Haiti last week was perhaps the most overwhelming. It is my hope that through some of pictures and stories that I share in the subsequent posts that you too will be motivated to go on mission. There truly is nothing like it.

Are You Contemprovant?

I was introduced to this great video today that spoofs a lot of today’s churches (mine included). The North Point Media Team did a brilliant job with this video.

… Sometimes you just have to poke fun at yourself.

Getting Away With Family

Let me just start by saying, “I love my family.” They’re incredible people and and I would rather spend time with them than anyone else. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen nearly enough. Life, seems to get in the way, schedules are complex, and geography divides.

But two weeks ago the family convened in Manzanita, Oregon for my cousin’s wedding and what was in my opinion, one of the greatest family get-togethers of my life. It truly was epic (I hate that word but it was).

It was brilliant.

We ate, laughed, took dozens of photographs and created indelible memories. It was only for a weekend and just down interstate 5, but it was without a doubt one of the best vacations I have ever been on.

Will we ever get together like that again? I don’t know. I hope we will because it is that type of weekend that I live for. Time with family, removed from the trappings of everyday life, doing nothing but enjoying the familial blessings God has given us.

To my family…thank you for a great weekend. I hope we can find a way to make that happen again. I know life is busy and there are obligations to attend to, but what a great weekend. We need to get away like that regularly, if for no other reason than to ride bikes on the beach through a monsoon, hangout late at night at the local pub observing the “weathered” locals, and eating over priced food at little cafes. That’s what life is all about. God has blessed us with a great family, let’s enjoy it!

My cousin Joshua Mahar took this brilliant photograph and I think it deserves a caption. Any ideas?
