10 Questions Following The Death Of Osama Bin Laden

The following are some of the many questions that have been running through my mind since hearing of Osama Bin Laden’s death.

1. Will this incite more terrorist attacks on the United States and our allies?

2. Should I be glad that he’s dead?

3. How should I respond as a Christian/is God pleased with how many professing Christians have responded to Bin Laden’s death with celebrations?

4. Is it appropriate to celebrate the killing of a man, even if he has committed horribleĀ atrocities?

5. Does Bin Laden’s death actually provide closure for people directly impacted by the September 11th attacks or does it just provide a sense of revenge?

6. What kind of world will my daughter grow up in, in terms of safety from terrorism?

7. Will releasing photos/videos of Bin Laden’s death and burial be viewed as disrespectful?

8. What right do I have to confront those who I believe are not responding in a Godly manner to this news?

9. How would it feel to be the person who actually killed Bin Laden?

10. What will the historical implications of this event be?

As you have watched the events unfold, what questions have you been asking yourself and/or how would you respond to some of the questions I have been mulling over?

  1. In a weird way I’m always interested in the “how”…. how did these specialized Seals get into the compound and what actually happened? That would be fascinating to know.

    • I am right there with you Dustin. I have the same sort of fascination with events like this. It really would be incredible to know the specifics of how the event unfolded. I love history and this sort of thing definitely peaks my interests.

  2. I’ve thought of many of these questions myself, over the last few days. I do think about the retaliation from this event and how it might affect the world. I was just saying to Greg yesterday that I think there will probably be a movie made out of this event – and then we will have some of the inside scoop as to how the Navy Seals were able to find him – and the process and time commitment that took.
    There are two issues here:
    1. We are Americans
    2. We are Christians

The reaction to this event should be a struggle for us – this is why we have had so many reactions to it – and rightly so. I am proud of America and the men and women who fight for our freedom and to keep us safe. I am proud to be a Christian and realize that Jesus came to not only save the safe and moral people of the world – but the ones that were far from Him. And he demonstrated His love by welcoming a thief and murderer into heaven with Him – while He died on the cross. Yes it’s complicated and we SHOULD struggle with it.

    • It is definitely a struggle but it seems to me that our faith should precede our national pride. I also think this has been incredibly revealing in terms of how we view ourselves. It seems as though because we have not committed the atrocities that Bin Laden committed, we have forgotten just how sinful and broken we are. Our separation from God didn’t begin with mass murder, it began with simply indulging in on off limits piece of fruit.

Although most people have never been a part of something as horrific as what Bid Laden was a part of, we need Jesus just as much as he did.

  3. John Saddington raised a question that I have been thinking about yesterday on his blog Human3rror.

What if you see Bin Laden in heaven?

    Definitely worth the read.

    • Thanks for the link Adam, that’s great question for us to ask ourselves. I’m going to have to pass that link along.

  4. 1. Yes, 2. Yes, 3. We should not feel joy, but sorrow for the loss of life even if it had to be.., and we should continue prayer for Islamite’s that they will come to realize they are following the devil. 4. No, 5. Would have to ask all of them. But from my perspective, it represents a strong move in the correct direction in a fight against evil. 6. It will either be a world slightly better than it is today, or slightly worse. Trending is worse. 7. Yes. No need to gawk at photos. It doesn’t change what has occurred, and is a violation of the Geneva convention to do so. Skeptics will always want more proof.. Take “The Trump” and his rant about Obama not being an American born in the USA. I don’t think he would’ve believed it even if he’d watched the birth. 8. We have a responsibility as Christians to respond as Jesus would, and as Americans to stomp out hate in any form. It is done! Amen! But that should be the extent of celebration. 9. If I were that soldier, I would feel good about completing my mission with success. I would not loose any sleep, but would pray for a greater change so that I wouldn’t have to do it again. 10. I guess we’ll see.
