Friday Feature #8: Mike Corley
Have you ever known someone for a long time but only recently discovered something amazing about them? Mike Corley is that person for me.
I went to school with Mike growing up and I always new that he was artistic, however I don’t think I ever really understood the talent this man possesses until just a couple years ago when I came across his blog and we began spending some time working on a children’s book together.
Let me just say that when I saw his site for the first time I was speechless. Truthfully, there are millions of artists out there. Some are good, some are…well…not so good, but Mike Corley is phenomenal.
One of the things I love about him is that he’s not just a “one trick pony.” His illustrations vary in terms of style, and technique and I think that is very uncommon. It’s not everyday that you find someone who is so versatile.
Interestingly enough in high school Mike got a D in art. Go figure!
After high school Mike trained professionally at the Seattle Art Institute where he honed his skills in illustration and design before entering the corporate world. Today however Mike is a freelance artist and is currently “working with Dark Horse Comics illustrating a four issue mini series called ‘The Strange Case of Mr. Hyde’ which is a sequel of sorts to the Robert Louis Stevenson novel.”
As far as long term goals are concerned Mike has been working on a comic book script that incorporate interests such as “folklore from around the world and history with a “steampunk vibe.” Mike told me, “I’m working on creating a world and a story that can be entertaining to anyone that likes fantasy or weird stories but it will have Christian undertones kind of like how Lewis did with Narnia. Something that can be enjoyed by believers and non believers alike.”
So if you enjoy good art or are in need of a piece of commissioned art, Mike Corley is definitely someone you need to get to know.
