To Feel Like A Kid All Over Again

This evening I’m heading out to Safeco Field to watch my hometown Seattle Mariners struggle for a win. Truthfully they’re not a good team and haven’t been for quite some time. Yet going to the ballpark to watch America’s pastime  gets me all nostalgic.

I remember growing up spending hours sorting through stacks and stacks of baseball cards and looking up their value in my Beckett Baseball Card Monthly, which I often got in my Easter basket…

I remember Ken Griffey Jr. in his heyday, and wanting to model my batting stance after his…

I remember simulating games in the backyard after dinner. I played all the positions…on both teams…

And I remember going to the Kingdom year after year to watch the Mariner’s play uninspired baseball…

However, every time I walked into that big concrete dome it took my breath away. It didn’t matter how good or bad the Mariners were, or how high my seat was. I was at a major league baseball game.

To this day, as I walk into Safeco Field, the Mariner’s home for the last decade, my heart still skips a beat and my breath catches in my chest, because I’m about to watch big league baseball.

And it makes me feel like a kid all over again.

What makes you still feel like a kid?

  1. I love going to a MLB game. I hate watching it on TV, but it’s by far my favorite sport to watch live. Have a great time!

    • Stephen, I think Baseball games are my favorite to go to as well. Football and basketball are games are a lot of fun, but there is something historic to me about attending a baseball game.

  2. What makes me feel like a kid? Eating a Popsicle every time does it for me. Eating a Slurpee comes pretty close too. Running through a sprinkler – and watching reruns of shows that were popular when I was a kid. Certain foods do that too – and always when I listen to 70′s music I’m transported back in time – never fails.

    • Any particular 70′s artist that you really enjoy Cindy?

      • Well this is a topic that could take some time – I’m pretty passionate about 70′s music in general – some 80′s too – they just don’t make great ballads like these anymore. Don’t get me wrong – I love a little Coldplay, Ben Folds, and Gabe Dixon Band – and other acoustic groups from today – but there’s nothing like a little Foreigner, Toto, Kansas, Starship, Aerosmith, Boston, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire – not to mention Heart, Queen and Fleetwood Mac. I liked the softer stuff though, not the heavy metal ACDC, Kiss or others like this. I’m a Carpenter’s, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Joni Mitchell, Abba kind of girl :) I have posted several of my favorite bands and songs from that era – I will have to post some more soon :)

  3. Like you, I am a huge baseball fan. By far my favorite sport to watch, play and cheer. Unlike your Mariners, I live in New York and we’ve always had a good team in the Bronx (Yankees). Yes, let’s forget the 80s for a moment.

And like you, when I get to the stadium and see that field, I get a rush of excitement. I love it. I used to go to the park early for batting practice, talk to some players, catch BP homerun balls. Tour the stadium, etc…

Just this year, I’ll be taking my son to his very first game (in 2 weeks). He’s 4 yrs old and I hope he gets the excitement that I did when I first went to the stadium. It’s a great feeling.

    • Moe, you are a lucky man. Although we won this evening and have had a few great years here and there, winning is not a usual thing for the Mariners. It sure would be nice to have a team like the Yankees that is a contenter every year.

On another note I hope you and your son have an amazing time. I can’t wait to be able to take my daughter to games. There is something special about going to an event like that with your dad. I’m sure it will be memorable for both of you.

  4. Great post. I feel like a kid whenever I get to fly somewhere. I love airplanes and get butterflies and everything before the flight. It amazes me that these giant hunks of metal can fly.

    • I can totally relate to that KC. I love flying as well and I am a total window seat person because I love watching everything outside. Like you said it’s pretty amazing to look down to the earth and know that you are jetting across the sky in a metal bird. Crazy!
