"Fancy Fast Food"

Growing up, a night at McDonald’s was a real treat. We “didn’t get out much” because money was tight, so a two cheese burger meal with fries and an orange Hi-C was like a night at Ruth Chris.

Interestingly enough, today it truly can be…sort of.

Check out “Fancy Fast Food”, it’s not what it looks like!

The Blindside And Related 20/20 Special

Monika and I went and saw the movie The Blindside with Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw this evening. Now I have to say that I’m typically not a huge fan of inspirational sports movies. I love sports and I love inspiration, but for some reason when the two get put together in film form I often find it to be cheesy.

However, I really enjoyed The Blindside and was able to follow the movie up with the 20/20 television special on Michael Oher. WOW, what a story!

It’s a thought provoking story and one that truly puts into perspective what really matters in life. But, If I am completely honest, I wonder if my heart is soft enough to take that sort of huge step.

Would I invite a stranger in need to come live with me?

It’s one thing to buy someone a meal or give a couple bucks, but to invite a person into your home is truly significant.

I’d like to think that I’d be able to do that, but I’m not sure.

What about you? Would you be able to invite someone you don’t really know to come live in your home?

When I Grow Up I Want To Be Like Sam

When I grow up I want to be like Sam.

What an incredible man of God! Not to mention the fact that not too many men his age can pull of a “Got Jesus?” T-shirt.

He is seriously a spiritual stud and an inspiration to me.

It doesn’t matter when you see him, if you ask how he’s doing he always responds, “more than a conqueror through Christ who loves me.”

Who is the Sam in your life?

December 26th Induced Depression

Without fail, December 26th brings about a good dose of depression for me. This year seems to be a little better, but nevertheless I still feel it.

It’s because I love the holiday season so much. From Thanksgiving to Christmas I am in my happy place.

I love cool weather, that entices the wearing of sweaters and music that speaks of peace on earth and a fictional fat man. I love feasts, family and frosty.

I love the change of pace, with days off of work and regular parties to attend.

And I love the Hope that was born into this world as a human baby, yet divine.

Unfortunately most of this gets put back into boxes and stored on dusty garage shelves until the next year; leaving only piles of wrappings and refrigerator doors covered in Christmas cards.

So tonight as I do every year, I reflect on all of the joy and excitement that has taken place over the last two months and long for it to come again in 2010.

Roman Holiday – "I Think It's Her"

Thought I’d give a little love on Christmas Eve to a local band that’s doing some great things. Check out Roman Holiday and their song, “I Think It’s Her.”

Broken

I’ve had the privileged the last couple days to spend some time with a great guy who has been humbled and broken. He’s lost just about everything…literally. He’s lost his job, his car, bank account, and is on the verge of being kicked out of his home. He mentioned today that if it “weren’t for his bad luck he’s have no luck at all.”

Talk about broken.

And to be going through all of this at this time of year is even more difficult.

While we’ve had some set times for us to get together he told me that he didn’t expect me to actually uphold those commitments because with the way things are going for him, it would be fitting for me not to show up or be available.

I wonder how often we have this perspective towards God when we are in the midst of a trial? Things seem to be going so horribly that it would be right in line for God not to show up when we really need Him.

…And yet he promises to never leave us.

Trials come in all shapes and sizes and yet it is my hope and prayer that no matter the size of the trial I will always expect God to show up.

When Police Officers Fall

I was watching television last night and learned of yet another police shooting in western Washington. Two Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies shot while attending to a domestic dispute call. They were looking to bring peace and were met with bullets.

That makes three in less that three months…

… Five deaths… three injured…

It’s interesting how events like these leave you shaken. To know that the people who give their lives to protect us are being gunned down for no reason is incomprehensible to me.

What possesses a person to do that…?

What satisfaction can come from killing…?

Situations like this remind me of how broken our world is. How completely in shambles we are as people and how desperately we need to be redeemed…all of us.

When police officers fall, it reminds me of how vulnerable we are as humans and how we need someone bigger and stronger and more powerful to save us.

Someone willing to show us the compassion, grace and forgiveness we need but most definitely don’t deserve.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  – Roman 5:8
