Operation Invite: The Monday After

Well, “operation invite” didn’t bring in as many guests as I had hoped for. We definitely had guests but it’s hard to determine just how many were a result of the challenge and how many would have been there anyway.

Inviting a friend to church is such a hard thing to do. You never know what they’re going to think. You hope they feel comfortable. You don’t want them to think you’re strange. These are concerns for everyone but especially for kids, since they often want nothing more than to just fit in.

With that being said, I am convinced that kids can invite friends and have an incredible impact on their lives. I’ve seen it happen. One girl brought her friend not to a regular Sunday morning service, but worship team practice! Now the family is coming  regularly!

Who knows what this challenge is going to do, but we are going to keep encouraging kids to share their faith and invite their friends. Lives are on the line, and these kids have the opportunity to change the lives of their friends forever.

Be praying for courage and strength as these kids step out in faith.

My Mii Friends

I just had a good dinner with some great friends and then we played Wii. Perhaps the best part of the whole experience was creating our own Mii’s. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the genius that is Nintendo Wii. A Mii is a character that you use for playing the games. Typically, you create a Mii that resembles yourself. While this can be entertaining on your own, it is incredibly so when you have the input of seven other people. It’s interesting to see how big they think your nose is, or what shaped eye brows you have. Fortunately for me, I turned out to be quite an attractive Mii.

Here’s to good friends, good food, good conversation and Mii!

Lifehouse on KBTC

I’m currently sitting on my couch watching the band Lifehouse on KBTC (PBS) and it’s so strange how they take my right back to high school and cruising around P-town in my parent’s maroon Mercury sable. Can you say HOT! There’s nothing quite like the wholesome goodness of a “mom car” let alone a maroon “mom car” when you’re in high school. I guess that’s a post for another time…

Anyway, thank you KBTC for bringing me sentimental programming. It’s good to travel back in time to reflect on past relationships, dreams, struggles, and maroon sables. I’ve come so far and yet I know five or ten years from now, I will be flipping through channels and will come across the soundtrack for these years of my life and I will think back on the early years of marriage, starting a business, balancing the responsibilities of adulthood and a silver Toyota Tacoma.

Moss

It’s about 2:25pm on Saturday the 23rd of February and I am about to embark upon a mission. I have my weapons and I am ready to take aim. My foe has no idea that I am coming, but it should be afraid, very afraid.

My mission…moss extermination. Goodbye moss, hello lush green grass!

Life Happens Over Coffee

Coffee and coffee houses have become such and incredible phenomenon. It’s in a lot of ways hard to fathom life before grande skinny vanilla lattes, overstuffed leather chairs and free wi-fi.  We have become a culture that revolves around Starbucks as if caffeine is the gravitational pull that puts us all into perpetual motion.

What!? Start your day without a cup of joe? Blaspheme!

My favorite local coffee shop is located across from a park, next to the library across the street from the post office and below some great condominiums. When you sit in the shop as I am now, you feel almost as if life revolves around this little shop. People plan their day around getting coffee at this shop; myself included.

You can just hear Suzie soccer mom say, ”We’ll drop off our book at the library, grab a book of stamps at the post office and go play at the park, but only if mommy can get her tall extra hot soy latte first.”

Little shops like this one provide the necessary stamina for mothers, city executives, students, and unemployed college drop-outs  alike to make it through the day. The crazy part of it however is that I don’t think it’s entirely the coffee. While the caffeine keeps their eyes open, it’s the social energy that keeps their spirits up. It’s the buzz of life and community and relationships that gives them hope. It puts into perspective the fact that there are more important things in life than paying bills or cleaning the house, or rotating your cars tires.

At the deepest level of humanity we all have this desire to connect. A desire to be with others and do nothing more than catch up on life.

Robert Putnam wrote a book Bowling Alone, that summed up says we are less social today than we were in past generations. He claims that while more people participate in bowling, fewer and fewer people are part of bowling leagues. He makes the case that the activities we participate in are far more individualistic than in the past.

Nicholas Lemann, editor of The Atlantic Monthly however responded in his article entitled Kicking In Groups by saying it’s not that we are less social than in past generations, we simply are social in different ways. The activities that provide us with social interaction are simply different than they were 30, 40, 50 years ago.

If I were to venture a guess as to where we are getting our social interaction, it’s at the local Starbucks. Whether we’re there for a meeting, a bible study, a heart to heart or simply to blog about coffee shops there is a level of community that is unmatched in virtual every other environment in today’s society. Simply put…life happens over coffee.

Student Life Coaching

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to start being a life coach for kids and youth. It is paramount that kids have positive influences in their lives. There are so many influences on kids in today’s society and a good portion of them are anything but positive.

There obviously is no substitute for good parenting, but I believe there is a very real place for a mentor or “life coach” who is partnering with a kid’s parents. Sometimes parents are too busy to spend the dedicated time with their child to make sure they are being productive. Sometimes a child is simply missing a positive male influence in their life. Sometimes a child just simply needs to hear words of wisdom from someone other than their parents.

In any event, a life coach can be an incredibly valuable tool to help a kid/student get the most out of the situation they are in.

If you have a kid who might benefit from life coaching, let me know. I’m getting ready to take on my first clients.

The Moses Experiment: Part 5

katrina-06-065.jpg

I spoke in jr. high chapel today about “burning bush” moments and I explained that for me, my burning bush moment was when I was a part of Hurricane Katrina relief.  That really was the event that pushed me into full-time ministry. I have to imagine that that whole experience was a bb moment for a lot of people and that it changed the course of many lives. How would my life be different if I didn’t have the opportunity to meet, evacuees, eat Red Cross food and walk through mold infested homes? Would I even be in full-time ministry?
